Patch Tips: Patch U Internships for College Students!

Patch U launched in September 2010 with the mission of developing strong relationships with students, faculty, and career services offices on college and university campuses around the country. Through these relationships The Patch hopes to give students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience working with a Patch site as interns, student freelancers or bloggers. Fairfield County Funding Opportunities

The annual Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge invites teams of students and their adult advisors to tackle local (K-5), regional (6-8), and global (9-12) environmental problems or issues and find replicable green solutions. This year’s challenge will award prizes totaling more than $300,000. Now entering its fifth year, the challenge is a collaborative effort of the Siemens FoundationDiscovery Education, the National Science Teachers Association, and the College Board. The program invites entries from students and team advisors (who must be full- or part-time school employees) in the United States. A panel of environmental experts and science educators will judge teams based on their research, analysis, and the potential of their solution to be replicated on a larger scale. (Deadline 3/5/13)

Wells Fargo and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation are offering financial assistance through Environmental Solutions for Communities, a new grant program designed to help communities in the United States create a more sustainable future through responsible environmental stewardship. Grants will typically range from $25,000 to $100,000 for projects of 18 months. (Deadline 12/3/12)

NEH Grants: Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections. Planning grants up to $40,000; implementation grants up to $350,000. This initiative is meant to help cultural institutions such as libraries, archives, museums, and historical organizations meet the complex challenge of preserving large and diverse holdings of humanities materials for future generations by supporting preventive conservation measures that mitigate deterioration and prolong the useful life of collections. (Deadline 12/4/12)

NIH is seeking proposals for research on how the elderly have been affected by the recent financial crisis or comparable elements of past economic downturns. The number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations. Application budgets are not limited, but need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum funding period is 5 years. (Deadline 1/7/13)
