VIDEO BRANDING: The average U.S. Internet user watches 186 videos per month, according to Comscore Video Metrix, and Reel SEO made the amazing discovery that more video is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than all TV networks created in 60 years. A well-crafted video builds relationships for your cause and is a useful brand-building tool.

INFOGRAPHICS BASICS: Storytelling is using a linear narrative to guide people and motivate them to surrender to the story being told. Infographics use data to tell your story by minimizing information anxiety.

THE FISCAL CLIFF: Here is a Time magazine article addressing the looming issues facing the nonprofit sector today, and here is another article on the serious discussion of cutting back or even eliminating the charitable tax deduction.

This is an opportunity to share with your charity’s constituency. For those who really go all out and become one of the 24 finalists, they win $500 to pay their electric bills! WHY DONORS GIVE: Eavesdrop on conversations with the nation’s most prominent donors by watching a series of new video interviews that feature Eli Broad, Melinda Gates, Ted Turner, and about 50 other prominent philanthropists. The interviews were conducted by the Bridgespan Group to help donors learn from one another. But the videos are also helpful for fundraising and charity executives who want to figure out what makes wealthy people give big. The videos are part of Bridgepan’s Give Smart resources for donors, which is good for any charity to know about anyway. The video collection debuts today with nearly 400 clips, but it will eventually offer 1,200 and is searchable so viewers can look at all the conversations about, say, education or the arts or giving strategies.

CAUSE MARKETING: Brand philanthropy is as old as philanthropy, but in the last few decades Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and “cause marketing” (perhaps having its renewal moment with the American Express campaign for the Statue of Liberty, is everywhere. Here is a rare video interview with the person behind some of the largest and most successful brand philanthropy programs in the U.S., namely, the General Mills Box Tops for Education and Save Lids to Save Lives.

Media Tips

CONTENT MARKETING: PR can repurpose marketing content into press releases, video news releases, and media pitches. Plus, don’t look now, but lots of content in social networks like YouTube and Twitter end up in news rooms. Effective content marketing helps you get found by journalists.

“Giving Tuesday” and Giving Every Day

Giving Tuesday is here: “We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals….Wouldn’t it be great to have a day for giving back?” Besides Save the Children, are there any Lower Fairfield County charities promoting this national day of giving campaign by creating their own Partner Pages to be featured on the #GivingTuesday website? Here are come of the charities promoted by the  Gates Foundation  that are advancing this day.  After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we now have #GivingTuesday. This is a chance for your charity (maybe next year) to engage your constituency in a way that’s meaningful to you and that can be shared with all of your (and your individual constituency’s) networks.

Something vital to consider every day is what the World Bank just issued: this 84-page report on the coming apocalypse, if the continued failure to respond aggressively to climate change persists. A 4°C world is likely to be one in which communities, cities and countries would experience severe disruptions, damage, and dislocation, with many of these risks spread unequally. It is likely that the poor will suffer most and the global community could become more fractured, and unequal than today.

Funding Opportunities

Haymarket People’s Fund: Grants from $3,000-$12,000 will be awarded in New England to grassroots social change organizations committed to social justice. Applications should address the root causes of injustice. Grants will fund start up and emerging organizations as well as groups that have a long history of grassroots organizing. Deadline: 12/5/12

Wounded Warrior Project: Grants ranging from $5,000 to $250,000 will be awarded for programs that enhance the lives of wounded veterans. Funds are intended for programmatic activities aimed at improving mental health and wellness, exposing veterans to new opportunities for physical fitness and activity, connecting veterans with their peers and communities, and enhancing veterans’ economic empowerment and independence. Deadline for Letter of Interest: 12/10/12

Donor Relations

WORD OF MOUTH: Social media has changed everything. Because word-of-mouth is the most trusted method of advertisement according to Nielsen and common sense, there are many opportunities online for your charity to identify and influence the influencers. Social networks are ripe grounds for conversation through reviews, complaints, praise, questions, etc. In fact, donors believe and trust the opinion of someone they know or an opinion online over traditional marketing. A glowing or scathing review from a trusted source can make all the diference.
